Some incompatibilists about free will or moral responsibility and determinism would abandon their incompatibilism were they to learn that determinism is true. But is it reasonable to flip-flop in this way? In this article, we contend that it is and show what follows. The result is both a defense of a particular incompatibilist strategy and a general framework for assessing other cases of flip-flopping.

This essay emerges from a series of reflections on the presence of 'ethical' narratives and images of the Holocaust in debates and demonstrations around the recent conflict in Gaza. I argue that the lack of measure and violence of these narratives, which are now turned onto the descendants of the Holocaust, arise as a consequence of contemporary theories of the Holocaust that eschew the possibility of legal reflection, legal judgement and legal justice. I conclude with a discussion of Hannah Arendt's (...) attempts to rethink law in the wake of the Holocaust, a law that does not exceed its limited, but clearly defined, area of competence. (shrink)

We report the identification of a recurrent, 520-kb 16p12.1 microdeletion associated with childhood developmental delay. The microdeletion was detected in 20 of 11,873 cases compared with 2 of 8,540 controls and replicated in a second series of 22 of 9,254 cases compared with 6 of 6,299 controls. Most deletions were inherited, with carrier parents likely to manifest neuropsychiatric phenotypes compared to non-carrier parents. Probands were more likely to carry an additional large copy-number variant when compared to matched controls. The clinical (...) features of individuals with two mutations were distinct from and/or more severe than those of individuals carrying only the co-occurring mutation. Our data support a two-hit model in which the 16p12.1 microdeletion both predisposes to neuropsychiatric phenotypes as a single event and exacerbates neurodevelopmental phenotypes in association with other large deletions or duplications. Analysis of other microdeletions with variable expressivity indicates that this two-hit model might be more generally applicable to neuropsychiatric disease. © 2010 Nature America, Inc. RÉSUMÉ Je veux m'attarder à trois aspects importants du Droit des gens de John Rawls. Je veux tout d'abord montrer que cette oeuvre contribue à réfuter l’interprétation erronée selon laquelle Rawls souscrirait à une conception individualiste du libéralisme. Je veux en deuxième lieu souligner l’importance d'intégrer un droit des peuples au sein de la philosophie politique libérale. Le principe de l’égalité entre les peuples peut être interprété comme ayant un corollaire, à savoir, le principe du développement égal des peuples, et (...) ce dernier principe est susceptible de nombreuses applications progressistes au niveau de la justice internationale. En troisième lieu, je veux suggérer que même si des amendements importants étaient apportés à la version initiale du Droit des gens, au point d'inclure, à l’encontre de l’opinion exprimée par Rawls, le principe de différence et d'en reconnaître l’universalité, on ne serait quand même pas en présence d'un libéralisme de type individualiste. ABSTRACT I would like to consider three important aspects of Rawls' Law of Peoples. I want to show, first, that the work serves to refute the mistaken interpretation according to which Rawls would subscribe to an individualistic interpretation of liberalism. Second, I also want to underline the importance of incorporating a law of peoples within a liberal political philosophy. The principle of equality between peoples can be interpreted as having a corollary, the principle of an equal development between peoples, and this last principle paves the way to many progressist applications at the level of international justice. Third, I want to suggest that even if amendments were made to the initial version of The Law of Peoples in such a way that, pace Rawls, it would now contain among its principles the difference principle and would recognize its universal status, the resulting approach would still not be a liberal individualism. In this article, I explore Seth Farber’s critique in _The Spiritual Gift of Madness_ that the leaders of the Mad Pride movement are failing to realize his vision of the mad as spiritual vanguard of sociopolitical transformation. First, I show how, contra Farber’s polemic, several postmodern theorists are well suited for this leadership (especially the Argentinian post-Marxist philosopher Ernesto Laclau). Second, I reinterpret the first book by the Icarus Project, _Navigating the Space between Brilliance and Madness_, by reimagining (...) its central metaphor of Icarus in the context of late capitalism as a prison world. Finally, I conclude with four strategies derived therefrom for higher functioning mad leaders to transform our penitentiary world. (shrink)

Usually scholars think of Marvin Farber as an American pupil of Husserl and his figure is given historical and institutional credit. It is also said that his thought misrepresented the intentions of the master and that his idea of a naturalization of phenomenology was devoid of hermeneutical grounds. All this has fed the myth of his heresy, the idea that his philosophical proposal could be summarized as a deviation from the orthodox canon. In this paper the legitimacy of this (...) perspective is widely discussed. Is it really correct to think of him as a child of the phenomenological continental tradition transplanted on American soil? Or would it not be more fruitful to consider him, beyond the canon, as an American philosopher fully immersed in the epistemological debates of his time? The paper argues in favor of this way of interpretation, discussing Farber’s own theoretical proposal in conjunction with the ecosystem of the American philosophical history. (shrink)

The issues between naturalism and subjectivism are brought into sharp focus, mainly through a critical examination of Husserl's phenomenology, with the author defending not only naturalism, but the view that only by a pluralism of methods can an adequate philosophy of experience be attained. Farber criticizes Husserl for failing to recognize that his method, rather than experience itself, generates some of the problems he attempted to solve.
